Greens have welcomed the announcement that the Oxford City Council has secured almost £200,000 of Government funding to purchase electric delivery vehicles and install charging points for Covered Market traders.
Last year Greens raised serious concerns about increased air pollution in the city centre with the opening of the Westgate Shopping Centre.
This additional Government funding will help address the illegal levels of air pollution in Oxford.Green Group Leader Cllr David Thomas says:
"This is welcome support for the Covered Market, who have been suffering since the opening of the expanded Westgate Shopping Centre. However, the pollution produced by the Covered Market, which has no car park, is a fraction of that attributable to the Westgate. Having given the Westgate permission to go ahead and expanded car parking to accommodate the additional traffic, the Council now needs to apply itself to solving this bigger air quality problem. Otherwise, whatever happens with the Covered Market, we will continue to see deteriorating air quality."
