Oxford City Council agrees £1.3m to complete Covered Market roof refurbishment – securing the structure for around 80 years

Says Green Councillor Craig Simmons, "The Council is giving with one hand whilst taking with the other. The Council-based Westgate Centre is sucking the life out of the rest of the City's retail offer and this long overdue maintenance work on the Covered Markets does little to help local traders to redress the balance. We are seeing our main shopping streets turn into pop-up retail units and souvenir shops whilst local traders suffer. The Council needs to mount a major campaign focusing on promoting those parts of the City suffering from the 'Westgate effect'."
