Green Party leader visits community centre threatened by council take over

Green Party leader, Natalie Bennett, is visiting Oxfordshire on Friday 28th August. Amongst several visits is a stop at the East Oxford Community Centre.

The Centre is currently under threat of takeover by the Labour Oxford City Council. Oxfordshire Green Party has launched a petition to save the Centre and related facilities that may be lost.

Steve Dawe, County Press Officer of Oxfordshire Green Party, said:

We are inviting people to sign a petition to keep East Oxford Community Centre under local community control. Greens are calling for:

  1. East Oxford Community Centre to be run for the community by the community.
  2. Improvements to the East Oxford Community Centre not to be made dependent on the closure of the Games Hall and Film Oxford building.
  3. Proper public consultation on the future of community provision in East Oxford.

The Green Party is concerned by the threat of reduction in facilities being proposed by the City Council. Similarly, we are concerned about the general commitment of the Council concerning community centres given the lack of proper leases and guarantees which the centres have been complaining about for some time.
