Westgate: cyclists are second class citizens

There is little prospect of the promised 1000 cycle parking spaces at the new Westgate appearing.  Forty eight stands round the back of Norfolk and Old Greyfriars Streets replace the ones removed from New Road, Queen St and St Ebbes -- a significant net loss of cycle parking.  Norfolk Street, heavy with bus traffic and with no cycleways, is every cyclist and bus driver's nightmare.  Every available railing and lamp post has a bike locked to it on the St Ebbes side of the development.
Says Green Cllr and Transport spokesperson Dick Wolff, “Signs from the ring road send the message 'city centre drivers welcome'.  The message to cyclists is equally clear : you don't matter.”
