The national demonstration against the renewal of Trident nuclear weapons, organised by CND and supported by Stop the War Coalition, is promising to be one of the most significant political events this year. A massive anti-Trident demonstration will augment the voice of the anti-war movement and strengthen the position of anti-war politicians.
It is senseless and heartless to spend £183 billion on renewing and maintaining Trident nuclear weapons while savage cuts are being imposed on social services for the most vulnerable members of the population, including the disabled and thousands of homeless people freezing in the streets.
The money which would be squandered on Trident renewal alone (around £100 billion) would be enough to fully fund A&E services for 40 years, employ 150,000 new nurses, build 1.5 million affordable homes, build 30,000 new primary schools, or cover tuition fees for 4 million students. The government should focus on real human security and the well-being of the population instead of directing public resources towards futile weapons of mass destruction which do not protect us from contemporary threats. The actual use of Trident weapons would be highly illegal considering the inevitably massive civilian casualties.
The vast majority of countries do not have any nuclear weapons. This includes Germany, which has greatly prospered by focusing on civilian manufacturing (which brings many more jobs) instead of pouring resources into building and maintaining weapons of mass destruction.
Sign up to the demonstration on Facebook and invite your friends. We also encourage everyone outside of London to get in touch with the CND office and book their coach ticket. We need to make this demonstration into an enormous show of opposition to these pointless, wasteful, illegal and immoral weapons of mass destruction.
