The Westmill Wind Farm Co-op was the first 100% community owned onshore wind farm to be built in the south of England. The five turbine site at Watchfield, Swindon, SN6 8TH was commissioned in March 2008. In October 2012 a community-owned solar-farm was created on the same site.

We have arranged an OGP visit to explore the site on 4 September.  Please join us as we're shown around by a knowledgeable guide, learn about the co-op, and get to see the wind-turbines up close. Our guide will be OGP member Sarah James, who is also a Westmill trustee.

Numbers are limited so please RSVP to book your space. Children are very welcome if you think they will enjoy it (the guides are used to school groups).

While the tour is free, Westmill do ask that visitors make a donation to the Westmill Sustainable Energy Trust (WeSET), the charity set up by members of both Westmill Wind and Solar Cooperatives to spread the benefits of Westmill to the wider community. We will collect cash donations on the day, and suggest £5 per person.

The tour will take c. 90 minutes, and will be followed by a social trip to a nearby beer garden at the King and Queen pub in Longcot. All welcome!

Travel to Westmill
 - By car, the site is just off the A420 at SN6 8TH. Parking is on site. Here is the exact location.
 - By bus, the regular Oxford - Swindon S6 bus service serves Watchfield. The bus stop is about a 15 minute walk from the site - or please get in touch if you need a lift.

Accessibility. The ground is uneven so it's not a truly accessible site, but we can make adjustments to the tour. Please do get in touch if you have any accessibility requirements so that we can help make the visit as accessible as possible.
