Oxford Green Party today called out Labour-run Oxford City Council for agreeing to sky high house prices on Barton - developed by the City under a joint arrangement with Grosvenor Estates.
Says Cllr David Thomas, Oxford City Council's Green Group Leader " A whole generation living and working in Oxford has now given up all hope of ever being able to own a home in the city. For our Labour-run council to be selling £300,000 one-bedroom flats at Barton Park - on land originally owned by the council - simply adds to the sense of misery and despair across the city."
The astronomical Barton Park house prices announced today are just the latest in an established pattern of behaviour by Oxford's Labour-run Council . Last month the council's planning committee voted through - thanks to Labour support - a re-development of Templars Square which consisted of just 23% social housing [1], and in March Labour's flag ship shopping centre - The Westgate - which offers no social housing at all advertised luxury 2-bed apartments at £500,000.
Deputy Green Group Leader Councillor Craig Simmons adds "Barton is not going to get the promised 50% affordable housing - now we hear that even the market housing is being advertised for well above the City average."
Oxford Greens are campaigning to ensure Oxford City Council honours its commitment to deliver 50% social housing and uses Council owned land to deliver 100% affordable housing.
