Williams attacks 'power freak cabal'
11 April 2012
David Williams, Leader of the Green group on Oxford City Council has strongly criticised the style of governance of the Labour administration that currently run the city.
‘The strong leader model implemented by the Labour group has created a democratic deficit in the city,’ says Williams. ‘The Labour councillors on the City Council are keen supporters of the strong leadership model. They have used their narrow majority to reduce the power of cross-party scrutiny function, to introduce one member decision-making "committees", to abolish the popular area committee system, to centralise planning and to limit the number of full council meetings.
A council where healthy political debate, community consultation and consensus decision-making was the norm has been transformed within a matter of years to a power freak cabal.’
