Oxford gets first Green Mayor
8 May 2011
As the Oxford Mail has neatly but misleadingly put it here, the new Lord Mayor - a keen cyclist - is swapping her bicycle chain for an offical chain.
In fact, Elise will be trying to use the official mayoral bike - a largely unused gift to the City from the Oxford campaigning group Cyclox - as far as possible to undertake her mayoral duties making use of 'fake' replica chains to ensure that the originals are safe as she cycles from event to event.
Elise, 45, works part-time for South East Green Euro MP Keith Taylor and lives with former Green city councillor Craig Simmons in Magdalen Road and their daughter Berenice, 10 who attends East Oxford Primary School.
Elise has already refused to fly to Bonn, Oxford’s twin town, or taken the mayoral car (as previous mayors have done) preferring instead to take the train. This also cost the taxpayer less.
She officially took up the role at a special meeting of Full Council on 19th May.
