Greens welcome U-turn on carnival funding

7 April 2013

Local Green Councillors in the Cowley Road area have welcomed the Labour-run City Council's U-turn on Carnival funding. As recently as February, Councillor Steve Curran, the Board Member for Young People, Education and Community Development, had rejected Green calls (at the February meeting of the City's Executive Board and during the City's Budget debate where Labour voted down Green proposals to fund theCarnival) to provide seed funding to the Carnival that is struggling to raise cash in the current economic climate.

Says Green Cllr Craig Simmons, a founding member of the Cowley Road Carnival,   "After much lobbying from local Councillors, who have already given up some of their own meagre ward grants to provide some working capital for the Carnival, the City Council have finally stepped in at the 11th hour to provide some limited funding for the Cowley Road Carnival. This provides about one-third of the money necessary to stage the Carnival. The race is now on to secure further funds. I hope that now the Council has, albeit belatedly, shown their commitment to the Carnival more donors will come forward."
