Greens have reacted angrily to news that just 39 Oxford businesses are paying the wage recommended by the Living Wage Foundation.
Says City Green Group leader Cllr David Thomas, a long term advocate of an Oxford Living Wage, "These latest figures make depressing reading. Raising low pay has been a bit of a blind spot for Labour for years. We are today doing what the Council have failed to do; challenging all retailers in the new Westgate to honour the Oxford Living Wage. It is time for a change in attitude; retailers who want to open up in Oxford must pay decent wages."
