It is a great honour to have been chosen as the Green Party candidate for the Wallingford County Council by-election, taking place on 28th November 2019.
I love Wallingford, the local countryside and the river, which is what brought me to the town; I’m a life member of the Rowing Club, which I first came to in 1992. If elected, I would work hard with our other Green Councillors to stand up for local residents and work for the best interest of our local community.
This by-election is a clear choice between Greens or Conservatives, At the last local elections in May, Greens got more votes than any other party and you elected Sue and Sam locally as your Green Councillors for the District Council. I’m also delighted to have the support of local Liberal Democrats, because I believe that politics is much more effective when done collaboratively. I will be an active, powerful and effective voice for the needs of this district as well as for the wider issues that affect all of Oxfordshire.
If elected, I will work hard to protect Wallingford and provide sustainable solutions that work for everyone. I will oppose the implementation of the Oxfordshire Local Plan, and I will work with Greens and Lib Dems on the District Council in asserting their right to withdraw the new local plan, which needs fundamental modification to meet the current and future needs of South Oxfordshire.
Working together to preserve our environment, locally and globally is essential for our local community. This includes ensuring we build homes in places that work best for everyone, not just on Green Belt land. Improving local public transport, and working with local residents to reduce local traffic and improve air quality is another key area that Greens locally and nationally are working on.
I will also join Greens locally in working hard to protect our public services. Restoring funding for local schools and ensuring that local School places, especially at Wallingford School, can expand in line with current demand and recent new homes is a priority for the Green Party.
Thank you for taking this time to read this letter, and I hope I can count on your vote on 28th November for the Wallingford County Council by-election.
