Ben Carter, Green Party candidate for University Parks

My Political Philosophy in a Nutshell:

Now that it’s raining more than ever, Know that we’ll still have each other, You can stand under my umbrella...

Rihanna, Good Girl Gone Bad, 2007

‘Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon. Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted  and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer. Only connect, and the beast and the monk, robbed of the isolation that is life to either, will die.’

E.M. Forster, Howards End, 1910.

I have put myself forward as a candidate for the Oxfordshire Green Party to promote two principles, inclusivity and connection. We live in a world where we are made to feel welcome only being by part of an exclusive group. Inclusivity ensured by exclusivity-no wonder people feel tense and confused!

This only encourages us to see the differences between each other rather than the simple fact that we share everything. By focussing on our differences we lose trust. Without trust we are weaker as individuals and hopeless as societies.

We are all connected. To each other and to nature. The most beautiful and life-affirming aspects of our existence occur when we realise those connections, when we let ourselves revel in each others happiness and when we take a step towards alleviating each others pain.

I want to take an active role in the political process as part of my own personal mission to connect with the lovely folk of Oxfordshire and with this green and pleasant land. Please get in touch and follow #greenumbrellaman to be a part of it.

About me

I have lived in Oxford for almost 7 years, moving here soon after receiving an MSc in Environmental Sustainability from Edinburgh University.

I worked in an environmental consultancy before moving to my current place of work, holding the post of Commercial Director at Oxford Renewables. I have enjoyed playing football for Basenose College (In fact you can find a picture of our title wining team hanging in the MCR common room!) and I am a keen sportsman. I was born in the USA, and while I consider Edinburgh my home (having moved there when I was 10) I have also lived for many years in Mexico, a country for which I retain a strong affection. I speak Spanish and French.

I have voted Green since 2010 and joined the Green Party in 2014. Very soon after joining the local party, I realised that I wanted to take an active role As such, I have helped campaign in all elections since joining, worked on fundraising and I now coordinate communications for the Oxfordshire Green Party (OGP).

Why am I standing in University Parks?

I am standing for inclusivity and to promote connection with nature. At a time when we are so often being encouraged to see the differences between each other, I want to focus on the simple fact that everyone shares everything. By concentrating on our differences we lose trust. Without trust we are weaker as individuals and as each person becomes disempowered our communities lose hope.

The Green message is about collaboration and positive action for everyone’s benefit, from the bottom up. The Green approach is about changing the way humans interact with the environment by thinking globally, and acting locally.

As your councillor I will continue the work of the OGP to release the county’s potential. We will lead the way in supporting social equality and putting environmentally focused targets at the heart of its long-term strategic plan to improve the county’s housing, transport links, energy efficiency and jobs.
