Oxford Labour refuse to rule out bedroom tax evictions

28 April 2013

At the 22nd April City Council meeting, Labour Councillors voted against a Green Group resolution ruling out evictions of council tenants impacted by welfare cuts including the bedroom tax.

An amendment from Oxford Labour removed from the motion a pledge to not evict Oxford council tenants who are losing out from the bedroom tax and other welfare reforms.

Green Councillor Sam Hollick, who put forward the original motion, said:

“The Tories are pushing through huge cuts to welfare nationally, so I’m disappointed that Oxford won’t be following the lead of other councils like Edinburgh and Brighton in pledging not to evict council tenants that can no longer afford the rent.”

The Green motion (weakened by Labour) was passed. It being better than nothing. Oxford Labour are now misleadingly laying claim to this Green initaitve - proving once again why we need elected Greens.
