Thursday 4 May 2017 saw local council, and county council, elections all over Oxfordshire.
The County Council has a budget of £800m and responsibility for a wide range of services including social care, transport, education, libraries and museums, and waste disposal. Green Party candidates stood in 55 wards to give people a chance to express their vote for a conscientious Green councillor to better serve the public (see below).
The Greens have had representation on Oxford City and County Councils since 1994 and have been making a better brighter future for the people of Oxfordshire. Our Green Party Councillors have shown themselves to be an effective force for change and our influence on Council policy has helped to make our great City even better.
We believe that we need an economy in Oxfordshire that works for everyone, and that local people should be involved in making decisions that affect them. We will stand up to protect local services from damaging cuts and privatisation. Read all about our policies in our Oxfordshire Mini Manifesto.
The work of Green Councillors, and Green Party campaigning, does bring success in Oxfordshire. For example, in February Cllr David Williams secured funding for Children's Centres in Oxford, while the contentious Oxford Waterways Public Space Protection Order was dropped after a campaign strongly supported by Green councillors. Greens have been heavily involved in the Iffley Open House occupation that has driven the issue of homelessness up the agenda in Oxfordshire.
All this points to the importance of the Green Party's work. If we want more of a voice, we must get more Greens elected!
In nearly every county electoral division you can vote for a Green Party candidate, and elect more conscientious Green councillors to better serve the public. We had candidates standing in 55 of the 63 divisions that had elections in May 2017.
