Greens support strike action by junior doctors

Cllr David Williams, Leader of the Greens on Oxfordshire County Council, indicates Green Party support for strike action by Junior Doctors.

Cllr Williams says:

"The new Junior Doctors contract is a disaster. My eldest son is a leading orthopaedic surgeon in the North West of England. I know from his experience that one of the greatest pressures points in the NHS is what is expected of junior doctors who work long shifts under intense pressure. To demand more is humanely impossible and will only lead to dangerous overload. The junior doctors are not simply making a stance for themselves, they are standing up for patients. We must support them. What is needed is to train more doctors and have a workload that makes real care possible not demanding more from already stressed staff."

Green Party health spokesperson and GP Dr Jillian Creasy has given her party's backing for junior doctors currently fighting health secretary Jeremy Hunt's plans to change their contracts. Dr Creasy said:

"This short-sighted government is constantly expecting the NHS to do more with less. Our NHS is in crisis, and by failing to invest in junior doctors, the government is locking this crisis in for years to come, as more junior doctors move abroad or simply quit. The Green Party stands with junior doctors, and supports their plans for industrial action over the planned changes to their contracts. These changes would be detrimental to the health of both junior doctors, who already work very long hours, and patients, whose safety will put at risk."
