Greens call for suspension of Oxfordshire UKIP Councillor

Henley South Cllr David Silvester should be suspended from Henley Town Council pending a Standards Committee investigation after he blamed recent flooding on the decision to legalise gay marriage.

The Greens are calling upon South Oxfordshire District Council determine whether Cllr Silvester has breached the Council's Code of Conduct which clearly states that Councillors must "... treat others with respect and ensure that you are aware of and comply with all legal obligations that apply to you as a member or co-opted member of the council and act within the law."

Says Green Party spokesperson, law lecturer Hazel Dawe

Cllr Silvester's remarks could be considered a breach of Article 14 of the European Convention on Human Rights which guards against discrimination. The Convention is NOT a European Union document - so UKIP members should have no problem recognising its legitimacy.
