Florence Park Cycling

Florence Park Cycling

Many people don’t realise that currently cycling is prohibited in Florence Park (except for ‘authorised cycling ‘– unspecified). Do have a look at the small note at the bottom of the big park notice boards.

Friends of Florence Park recently asked on line that cyclists be aware of other users and their needs and not behave selfishly. They are not proposing that cycling should be forbidden just that cyclists pay attention to pedestrians.

What do you think?

Do you agree that considerate cycling should be allowed in Florence Park with clear signage instead of the current unclear situation?

Q: Do you have any comments to add about cycling in Florence Park?
A: I cycle from home/work to play ultimate frisbee in the park in the summer, and so usually cycle inside the park to where we are playing. Many other players do this, and I didn’t even realise it wasn’t allowed.

Q: Do you have any comments to add about cycling in Florence Park?
A: Florence Park links Larkrise primary school and a large part of its ‘catchment area’. Allowing considerate cycling in Florence Park encourages children and their adults to get to school in a sustainable manner. Two of the three roads that skirt the park are dangerous for adult cyclists/totally unsuitable for children on bikes – the park (together with the cycle paths that lead to it) offers a ‘pocket’ of relatively safe cycling. Not allowing cycling in the park could potentially create other issues (eg where to park bikes if they aren’t allowed in the park, people pushing bikes take up a lot more space/cause more congestion than people on bikes). Creating a context in which all park users (including people that walk, people that cycle and dogs) can come to appreciate each others needs is surely a good thing?

Q: Do you have any comments to add about cycling in Florence Park?
A: I really appreciate the ability to cycle in the park as it is a lovely route to pretty much anywhere I go, and we are cycling to school every day through there. My children have learned to ride their bikes there as it’s a safe place with some gentle inclines and enough space to practise. I try to be considerate of other park users and give pedestrians and dog walkers priority, the lack of clarity doesn’t help though and a couple of times I have been criticised for cycling by people who don’t know it’s ‘authorised’. I spoke to someone in the Council after this to clarify what exactly was ‘authorised’ and they said it hasn’t been clarified but it was basically about being considerate to other users and not bombing through using it as a rat run. A couple of dog walkers have been quite rude to me as they were unaware of this so I think it would really help if it was clearer, but please don’t ban cycling! Florence Park is one of the only places you can cycle in Oxford that is car-free.

Q: Do you have any comments to add about cycling in Florence Park?
A: I cycle through the park often with my children on the way to and from school. I value it being open to cyclists enormously. It enables us to cycle safely. Were we not allowed to cycle in the park I would consider not cycling but driving. I believe many others would feel the same as well.

Q: Do you have any comments to add about cycling in Florence Park?
A: There should be clear signage. I am a cyclist and I am very careful to give way to pedestrians. A ‘cycle’ lane on the main grove might be a good idea, but I imagine FOFP would understandably be reluctant to put one in.

A: I would like cycling to be prohibited in Florence Park and signed to be placed up enforcing it.
My dog has been hit twice by cyclist riding through the park, the ppl did not stop and did not help. Florence Park has always been cycle free and this use to be enforced. Why should it change now?

A: Cycling is possible but it should be clear where, how fast and who has priority is pedestrians.

A: Great place to teach children to ride a bike (safe and flat).
