South East Green Party MEP lambasts Tories right to buy announcement

Keith Taylor, Green MEP for South East England, has slammed the Tories policy announcements today to extend right to buy to housing association homes and to require councils to sell 5% of their remaining housing stock.

Earlier this month, Keith Taylor launched a new report on the UK housing crisis which found that Margaret Thatcher’s Right to Buy policy introduced in the 1980s was directly linked to the high numbers on social housing waiting lists today (latest Government figures show this to be 1.8 million people).

Keith Taylor Green MEP for South East England said:

“Right to buy is a failed policy which can be directly linked to the huge number of people on social housing waiting lists today.

Extending right to buy to housing association homes is stupid because it will only exacerbate the housing crisis further as there is no duty to replace the homes that are sold.

Instead of selling off more homes we need to reinvest in council housing instead”.
